Brilliant Berti: The Klein Family’s First Million-Dollar Thoroughbred and Turf Star

The Klein family has been deeply involved in Thoroughbred racing for over 30 years, with Richard Klein, his mother Elaine, and father Bert collectively achieving notable success with horses like Super Derby winner Outofthebox and graded stakes winners Allamerican Bertie and Hurricane Bertie. However, Richard regards Brilliant Berti, a colt trained by Cherie DeVaux, as the best horse they have ever raced. Brilliant Berti recently became the Klein family’s first million-dollar earner and has surpassed $2 million in earnings after winning the Wise Dan Stakes (G2T) at Churchill Downs, adding to his impressive record including multiple graded stakes victories and placings.

Brilliant Berti is a fourth-generation homebred, tracing back to the Klein family’s early investments in bloodstock, with his pedigree deeply rooted in the family’s lineage. Richard Klein bred Brilliant Berti by pairing his mare Believe in Berti with the stallion Noble Mission, aiming for a complementary match that would excel on turf. Despite the passing of Elaine and Bert Klein, their legacy continues through Brilliant Berti’s success, and Richard Klein dreams of competing in the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland in 2026, signaling the family’s ongoing commitment to the sport.
