The Bosnian Mountain Horse, a native breed of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was once critically endangered due to modernization and mechanization reducing its agricultural role. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of breeders, experts, and supportive organizations, the population has grown from fewer than 200 to 327, with a goal of reaching 500 by 2028. These horses are valued for their disease resistance, modest nutritional needs, strong temperament, and robust build, making them well-suited to natural environments like the Sutalo family estate near Hutovo Blato.
Preservation efforts have been bolstered by financial and veterinary support, as well as DNA analysis to ensure breed authenticity and prevent misuse. Genetic studies have also linked the Bosnian Mountain Horse to original European wild horses, highlighting its historical and cultural significance. Today, the breed symbolizes the fight to preserve Bosnia and Herzegovina’s rural traditions and identity amid rapid modernization.
