Alpena County Fair Hosts Over 140 Youth in 4-H Animal Showing Events

Over 140 youth from the Alpena County 4-H program are participating in animal showing events at the Alpena County Fair this week, marking a steady increase in involvement over the past four years. The program, one of the largest in Northern Michigan with 175 active members and outreach to around 2,500 youth annually, has expanded its facilities to accommodate the growing number of animals, including chickens, horses, rabbits, and more. Supported by consistent funding from the Alpena County Youth and Recreation millage since 2011, 4-H continues its long-standing mission of youth development, evolving from agricultural skills training to fostering leadership, community involvement, public speaking, sportsmanship, and entrepreneurship.

The fair’s schedule includes a variety of animal shows throughout the week, culminating in a 4-H awards breakfast and market animal sale. Beyond the fair, Alpena County 4-H organizes year-round activities such as a pollinator garden project and an ice fishing program, further engaging youth in diverse educational experiences. The program serves as a vital platform for young people to develop skills and prepare for future leadership roles in their communities.
