Darlene Moore, founder of Save-A-Horse stable in Sycamore, has been rescuing and caring for horses and donkeys for over 40 years. Originally starting the stable in 1982 to save horses from slaughter and later running trail rides for 32 years, she transitioned the operation into a nonprofit 11 years ago to better support the animals’ care through donations. Despite health challenges and the physical demands of running the sanctuary, Moore continues to rescue animals in genuine need, focusing on those whose owners cannot care for them due to serious circumstances rather than convenience.
Moore’s dedication is fueled by her deep compassion for the animals, often going above and beyond by personally administering care and seeking professional help when needed. While she hopes to eventually wind down the rescue and refer new cases elsewhere, she remains committed to the current residents and plans to resume the annual open house event next year. Throughout her journey, Moore has relied on community support and her faith, emphasizing that her mission is driven by love for the horses rather than financial gain.
