Darlene Moore, founder of Save-A-Horse stable in Sycamore, has been rescuing and caring for horses and donkeys for over 40 years. Initially starting the stable in 1982 to save horses from slaughter and later running trail rides for 32 years, she transitioned the operation into a nonprofit 11 years ago to better support the animals’ care through donations. Despite health challenges and the physical demands of running the sanctuary, Moore continues to rescue animals in genuine need, often those abused or abandoned, while being selective about new intakes.
Moore has faced increasing strain with age but remains dedicated to the animals, relying on her experience and occasional professional help to maintain their health. Although she skipped this year’s annual open house due to health issues, community support through donations has remained strong. Looking ahead, Moore hopes to gradually wind down operations by caring for current animals but referring new rescues to other organizations, emphasizing her lifelong commitment to the horses rather than financial gain.
