Zhaosu County Transforms Traditional Horse Culture into Thriving Tourism and Sports Industry

In Zhaosu County, Xinjiang, the traditional role of horses has transformed from practical transport and military use into a diversified economic asset centered on leisure, sport, and tourism. With over 122,000 horses locally and more than 500,000 in the broader Ili Kazak autonomous prefecture, the region has invested in state-owned breeding farms, advanced veterinary care, and professional equestrian sports, including international competitions. This shift has professionalized horse breeding and care, turning horse riding into a service industry and expanding tourism beyond seasonal peaks with events like “horses treading snow” in winter.

Beyond tourism and sport, Zhaosu has developed a comprehensive value chain by integrating biotechnology and downstream processing of horse milk, meat, and fat into cosmetics and traditional medicine markets. This multi-layered equine industry now generates over 1.5 billion yuan ($220 million) annually, supporting tens of thousands of local farmers and herders. By redefining the horse’s economic role, Zhaosu has preserved cultural heritage while creating a sustainable, modern industry that drives regional development.
