Yellowknife Equestrian Society Launches Pop-Up Stable to Revive Local Horseback Riding Community

Caterina Walsh and Abbey Wilson emphasize the deep connection and mutual trust developed between riders and horses, highlighting the benefits of horseback riding such as physical fitness, leadership, and mental well-being. The closure of North Country Stables in Yellowknife, following the 2023 wildfire evacuation and the death of owner Tom Pisz, left the local equestrian community without a home for their horses and disrupted this close-knit community. Despite this loss, the NT Equestrian Society has fostered renewed enthusiasm for equestrian activities and is working to revive the sport locally.

To restore horseback riding opportunities in Yellowknife, the society plans to establish a temporary pop-up stable at Osprey Meadows next summer, supported by community donations, grants, and partnerships. This initiative will offer lessons, rides, and wellness programs using borrowed horses, aiming to re-engage the community and provide educational experiences. The society is also running a fundraising raffle to help finance a permanent stable in the future, hoping to sustain and grow the local equestrian community for youth and beginners alike.
