Wyoming Honor Farm to Host Wild Horse Program Clinic Featuring Inmate Trainers and Adoptable Horses

The Wyoming Honor Farm (WHF) will host a public Wild Horse Program clinic on September 12th, featuring opportunities to view and observe the training of wild horses and burros. The clinic runs from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM, with check-in starting at 12:30 PM, while regular visiting hours for approved visitors are scheduled for the following day, September 13th. The program, a collaboration between the Bureau of Land Management and the Wyoming Department of Corrections since 1988, involves inmates training wild horses gathered from public lands, helping both the animals and inmates transition positively. This initiative contributes to Wyoming’s notably low recidivism rate by providing meaningful rehabilitation work.

The program includes biannual horse adoptions accompanied by gentling clinics where inmate trainers demonstrate techniques such as catching, handling, and beginning to ride the horses. Typically, around 35 halter and saddle-started horses, along with some wild burros, are available for adoption. Visitors to the Honor Farm must adhere to strict rules prohibiting pets, firearms, alcohol, and the use of cell phones, cameras, or tobacco on site, as well as follow a modest dress code to maintain a positive environment. This unique program highlights Wyoming’s innovative approach to corrections and wild horse management.
