Wyoming Honor Farm Hosts Wild Horse Program Clinic to Support Inmate Rehabilitation

The Wyoming Honor Farm (WHF) will host a public Wild Horse Program clinic on September 12th, featuring demonstrations of horse and burro training by inmate trainers. Check-in begins at 12:30 PM, with the clinic running from 1:00 to 3:30 PM, while regular visiting hours will be held the following day. The program, a collaboration between the Wyoming Department of Corrections and the Bureau of Land Management since 1988, trains wild horses gathered from public lands, helping inmates develop skills and reduce recidivism through meaningful work.

Inmate trainers at WHF teach horses to be gentle and rideable, preparing them for biannual adoptions that include gentling clinics showcasing training techniques. The program not only benefits the horses but also supports inmate rehabilitation, contributing to one of the nation’s lowest recidivism rates. Visitors to the clinic must adhere to strict rules, including no pets, firearms, alcohol, or cell phones on site, and a modest dress code to maintain a positive environment.
