Woodbine Entertainment is addressing the challenges of promoting racehorse ownership amid urbanization and rising living costs by creating a new role: manager horse ownership development. This position aims to broaden the appeal of both thoroughbred and standardbred racing by recruiting new owners, enhancing the owner experience, and exploring alternative ownership models such as racing clubs and fractional ownership. The role will build on the foundation laid by Megan Walker, Woodbine’s director of standardbred racing operations, and work collaboratively with industry partners to strengthen racing foundations as part of Woodbine’s Five-Year Strategic Plan.
The manager horse ownership development will focus on educating prospective owners about various participation options, from claiming races to syndicates, and will target a diverse audience beyond traditional demographics. Recognizing the impact of past industry changes, including the end of the Ontario Slots at Racetrack Program, Woodbine aims to rebuild ownership through innovative outreach like seminars and paddock tours. The position, which covers both breeds and involves significant time at Woodbine Racetrack and Mohawk Park, is expected to be filled soon, with interviews underway and a priority on finding a candidate who can bridge practical racehorse experience with owner engagement.
