Winzo Challenges YouTube’s Block of Its Channel Over Online Gambling Content Dispute

Winzo, an online gaming company, has challenged YouTube’s decision to block its channel “WinZOOfficial” on grounds of alleged violations of YouTube’s policies against online gambling content. Winzo contends that its games are skill-based rather than gambling or betting games, which are generally not prohibited under Indian law. The Delhi High Court has allowed Google to respond to the notice, while Winzo’s app remains available on Google Play and Apple App Store despite the YouTube channel being inactive.

This dispute underscores the ongoing legal ambiguity in India regarding the distinction between “games of skill” and “games of chance.” Indian gaming laws, governed by the Public Gaming Act of 1867 and state-specific regulations, prohibit games of chance but allow games of skill, though interpretations vary across states. YouTube’s updated policies, effective March 2025, ban content promoting online gambling unless certified by Google, reflecting stricter enforcement. Winzo’s case highlights the challenges in regulating online gaming content amid evolving definitions and legal frameworks.
