Wilmington College Occupational Therapy Program Hosts Therapeutic Riding Camp for Children with Disabilities

Wilmington College’s graduate occupational therapy program emphasizes preparing professionals to serve rural communities, exemplified by its Therapeutic Riding Camp held at the college’s Equine Center. The five-day camp engaged 30 children with disabilities from surrounding counties in sensory activities and horseback riding, using gentle horses to provide calming, multi-sensory therapeutic experiences. The camp not only enhances recreational services for local children but also integrates occupational therapy students into hands-on learning, where they serve as one-on-one buddies, gaining valuable field experience.

The camp, which evolved from a class idea three years ago, involves collaboration across campus departments and aims to develop a certified therapeutic riding program. Faculty and students alike have found the experience deeply rewarding, with students forming strong emotional connections to the campers and witnessing firsthand the positive impact of their work. This initiative reflects the program’s mission to promote community-based health and wellness and improve quality of life through innovative, problem-solving approaches in occupational therapy.
