Willow’s Haven: A Sanctuary for Horses in Need

Willow’s Haven Farm Sanctuary in Rockingham County was inspired by a horse named Willow, a 22-year-old Tennessee Walking horse who faced significant challenges before finding refuge at the sanctuary. Founder Danielle Southerly shared that Willow was previously subjected to harsh treatment, leading to severe foot problems and anxiety. After her previous owners could no longer care for her due to financial difficulties exacerbated by COVID-19, Southerly adopted Willow and established the nonprofit to prevent horses like her from ending up in the slaughter pipeline.

The sanctuary provides lifelong care for horses that are often considered broken, old, or sick, ensuring they have a safe haven regardless of their condition. Southerly emphasizes that the sanctuary is not an adoption center; instead, it is committed to providing a permanent home for its residents. Willow, who has become a local celebrity, often accompanies Southerly to events, helping to raise awareness about the sanctuary’s mission and the broader crisis in horse care.

Southerly is actively seeking corporate sponsorships and expanding outreach through speaking engagements and an Equine Assisted Learning program. She aims to educate the public about the challenges facing horses and the importance of reputable rescues, highlighting the need for community support to sustain the sanctuary and its mission.
