Williamsburg Community Rallies to Save Horse Show Club After Farm Show Board Votes to Disband

Supporters of the Williamsburg Horse Show Club gathered to oppose the Farm Show board’s recent decision to disband the club and replace its ring with a tractor pull. The club, valued for providing affordable equestrian opportunities for children to develop skills before advancing to higher-level competitions, has garnered strong community backing, including a petition signed by about half the local population. Volunteers emphasized the club’s role in fostering sportsmanship, ambition, and inclusivity, noting plans to offer opportunities for children with disabilities.

In response, Farm Show Board President Jeff Walason explained that the horse show committee operates under the board’s authority and is not self-funded, with key representatives absent from recent meetings. The board voted 13-2 to dissolve the club after discussions about expanding tractor pull activities. Following the decision, tensions rose as supporters expressed frustration with the board’s handling of public comments and communication. Many riders and families lamented the loss, highlighting the club’s importance in preparing young equestrians for competitive success.
