Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Event Places 150 Animals in New Homes in Monroe, N.C.

The Wild Horse and Burro Adoption event, held from August 14 to 16 at the Simpson Events Center in Monroe, N.C., successfully placed 120 horses and 30 burros into new homes. Organized by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), this taxpayer-funded program aims to manage wild horse and burro populations on public lands in the western U.S. by finding nurturing homes for these animals once their populations reach certain limits. The event attracted adopters from across the country, reflecting high demand, and included outreach efforts with local youth groups and students from Oregon State University’s agricultural leadership academy.

BLM Event Coordinator Hunter Paffrath emphasized the importance of bringing more animals to meet community demand and praised the support from Union County’s agricultural commission and the Simpson Events Center. The animals, sourced from states like Idaho, Nebraska, and Arizona, were in good condition, and the adoption process was smooth and well-supported. Participants expressed excitement and appreciation for the opportunity, highlighting the event’s success in fostering responsible stewardship and community engagement around wild horse and burro management.
