Widden Stud Welcomes Record-Breaking Sprinter Cogburn to Hunter Valley for 2024 Breeding Season

Widden Stud in the Hunter Valley has acquired the record-breaking American sprinter Cogburn, a son of Not This Time, ahead of the upcoming breeding season. Cogburn boasts an impressive racing career with nine wins from 16 starts, over $2.4 million in earnings, and was rated the joint-best sprinter globally in 2024. Having just completed his first book of over 190 mares at WinStar Farm in Kentucky, Cogburn brings international prestige and a valuable outcross sire line to Australia. Owner Antony Thompson highlighted Cogburn’s athleticism, speed, and strong breeder interest, with an introductory fee of AU$27,500 seen as excellent value.

Cogburn will stand alongside Widden’s champion sire Zoustar, who recently secured the stud’s first sire title since 1993. Thompson expressed pride in continuing Widden’s legacy of champion sires and noted the overwhelming breeder support for Cogburn, with nearly full bookings and 22 mares from Widden already nominated. The addition of Cogburn is expected to have significant impact both on the track and in the sales ring, offering breeders a sought-after stallion with genuine international credentials.
