In 2025, Western Washington University formed its dressage team following the establishment of Region O for the Intercollegiate dressage Association, allowing the student-led team to compete in the IDA. Despite being new, the team quickly advanced to Nationals in April and continues to grow, recently competing at Washington State University. dressage is an equestrian sport emphasizing subtle communication and trust between rider and horse, where riders use precise, minimal body cues to guide horses through graceful movements. The team trains with a variety of horses to build adaptability, preparing for competitions where they are scored on specific movements.
The Western dressage team practices twice weekly and faces challenges such as unpredictable weather and caring for the horses beyond riding, including grooming and health checks. Members appreciate the sport’s blend of discipline, artistry, and partnership with horses, fostering a supportive community despite the sport’s individual nature. The team aims to make equestrian sports more accessible to students and looks forward to upcoming competitions, including one at Oregon State University in January 2026.
