The WBFSH has officially signed a Welfare Charter during its Gala Dinner, committing all member studbooks worldwide to prioritize horse welfare in breeding and selection practices. This Charter, based on seven core principles including ethical management, welfare integration, research support, and genetic traceability, is mandatory for membership and requires regular assessment and cooperation with audits. It forms a key part of the WBFSH’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, which emphasizes animal welfare alongside traceability, scientific innovation, and enhanced member services.
In collaboration with Hartpury University, WBFSH is conducting research to identify welfare priorities and develop evidence-based solutions, with findings underpinning the Charter. This collective commitment sends a strong global message that excellence in horse breeding must be grounded in absolute respect for animal welfare. WBFSH views the Charter not as a conclusion but as the beginning of a transformative, responsible, and transparent approach to breeding focused on the well-being of every horse.
