Daniel Shaffer, who is deaf and legally blind, finds weekly horseback riding at Walnut Grove Farms in York County to be more than a sport—it is a therapeutic escape that builds his confidence and independence. His trainer, Renee Poff, highlights Daniel’s determination and progress in forming a bond with horses, emphasizing the farm’s mission to empower individuals with disabilities by helping them develop skills that foster strength and freedom.
When Walnut Grove Farms was denied special accommodations for riders with disabilities at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show, they responded by creating their own inclusive event—the Walnut Grove Championship. This championship brought together 20 riders, including Daniel, to demonstrate that inclusion is about abilities, not limitations. The farm’s collective stand underscores the importance of providing opportunities and goals for people with disabilities, ensuring they can participate fully and proudly in the sport.
