Volusia County is considering a proposal by Councilman Troy Kent to permit horseback riding on its beaches, aiming to enhance the experience for both locals and visitors. Kent believes this initiative would provide unique opportunities for beachgoers, suggesting designated areas on the northern and southern ends of the county. He envisions a trial period of 18 months to gauge public interest and support.
During discussions, community members expressed enthusiasm, with suggestions for a test area in North Ormond before broader implementation. Kent emphasized that if approved, there would be regulations in place, including cleanup requirements and guided tours to ensure responsible riding. Local horse owner Karen Knies highlighted the physical benefits of beach riding for horses and advocated for their continued presence in the community.
Kent is determined to advance this proposal, believing it would not only bring joy to beachgoers but also create lasting memories associated with horseback riding along the scenic Volusia County coastline.
