Volusia County Considers Allowing Horseback Riding on Beaches with New Regulations

Volusia County is considering allowing horseback riding on certain beaches, with a proposal set for discussion at an upcoming county council meeting. Two potential locations are being evaluated: a nine-mile stretch at Al Weeks North Shore Park in Ormond by the Sea and the Neptune Beach approach in Ormond Beach. The initiative aims to provide residents with more recreational options while maintaining environmental protections, including restrictions during turtle nesting season, mandatory wildlife protection training, a 48-hour notice before riding, and requirements for cleaning up after horses.

Jennifer Miko, a local equestrian who currently trailers her horses to Flagler County for beach rides, supports the proposal, believing it would enhance Volusia’s appeal as a vacation destination. While some rules, such as horses wearing bags to collect waste, present challenges, Miko is willing to comply if it means she can enjoy beach riding closer to home. Councilman Troy Kent is optimistic about the program’s success and even envisions potential expansion to other areas like New Smyrna.
