Volunteers Bring Joy and Growth to Children with Disabilities Through Prairie Strides Horseback Program

Kaeden Power, a 19-year-old University of Manitoba student, volunteers with Prairie Strides, a horseback riding program for children aged five to 15 with developmental disabilities. As a sidewalker, he helps ensure the safety of the children during rides, finding the experience rewarding and encouraging others to volunteer if they can. Prairie Strides, founded in 1977, runs biannual 10-week sessions aimed at improving participants’ confidence, social skills, and physical abilities through interaction with gentle horses.

Longtime volunteer Lynda Walker, 78, highlights the program’s emotional impact, noting the strong bonds formed with the children and horses over the years. The organization depends heavily on about 75 volunteers and seeks more to support roles such as horse leaders, sidewalkers, and instructors. Executive director Christina Dolinski emphasizes that volunteers are essential for the program’s success, and those interested can apply online to join this meaningful community effort.
