Tsaag Valren, known for contributions to French Wikipedia on horse breeds, also works on reconstructing pedigrees of major horse breeds using Wikidata. This genealogical work, presented at the 2024 French-speaking Wikiconvention, helps visualize horse lineages—such as the Orlov Trotter in Russia and the Hungarian Shagya—through interactive family trees embedded in Wikipedia articles. These visualizations are crucial for managing inbreeding and preserving endangered breeds by tracing their genetic heritage.
One notable project involves the French Percheron draught horse, with detailed pedigree data dating back to 1883, created through months of Wikidata item entries. The approach uses Wikidata properties and templates originally designed for humans, adapted for horses, enabling clickable links and comprehensive lineage graphs. Valren encourages others to apply these data visualization methods to other animal populations, including wild orcas, red pandas, and pangolins, to aid in conservation efforts.
