Tensions in Los Angeles escalated Sunday as demonstrators protesting federal immigration raids clashed with heavily armed National Guard troops and law enforcement near a downtown detention facility. The National Guard, deployed by President Trump against state officials’ wishes, formed a skirmish line and used tear gas and less-lethal projectiles after objects were thrown at them. The LAPD, trained in crowd control, arrived in riot gear to disperse crowds, but violence intensified with protesters throwing bottles, fireworks, and vandalizing property, including self-driving cars. A motorcyclist also rammed into officers, injuring two before being arrested.
As the unrest spread, demonstrators blocked the 101 Freeway, prompting California Highway Patrol officers to clear the area amid further attacks on police vehicles. Authorities employed de-escalation tactics such as the “L-formation” to guide protesters off the freeway. By late evening, the LAPD declared downtown Los Angeles an unlawful assembly and worked to disperse remaining crowds, resulting in dozens of arrests. Officials continue reviewing footage to identify and charge those responsible for assaults and property damage during the protests.
