Victoria’s Specialized Large Animal Rescue Units: Saving Horses and More Amid Funding Challenges

Victoria has two specialised Country Fire Authority (CFA) large animal rescue units—Arthur’s Creek Strathewen and Macclesfield—that respond to emergencies involving horses, alpacas, cows, and other large animals. These volunteer brigades are highly skilled and equipped to safely rescue animals without causing injury, unlike some common but harmful methods used by farmers. Despite their crucial role and frequent call-outs, these units face funding challenges, relying heavily on fundraising as CFA provides limited financial support and is not currently expanding such services.

Across Australia, large animal rescue capabilities vary significantly by state. While Victoria’s CFA units are among the few specialised responders, New South Wales has numerous SES and Fire Rescue brigades trained in this area, South Australia has widespread rescue kits and capabilities, and Queensland has very limited services. Efforts are underway to build national accreditation and training programs, with partnerships involving UK trainers and organisations like the Australian Horse Industry Council, aiming to professionalise and expand large animal rescue services nationwide.
