Victorian Racing Industry Rallies as Fires Threaten Thoroughbred Farms and Horses

A major fire swept through several racing properties in north-east Victoria, including Longwood Thoroughbred Farm, causing significant damage such as the loss of a pre-training barn, a house under construction, and most fencing. Despite the destruction, thanks to well-irrigated protected areas and coordinated efforts by CFA, staff, and the Hayes family, 320 of the 327 horses on the Longwood property escaped with their lives, with only one horse in critical condition. Horses from the spelling paddock were relocated to Inglis Sales Complex and then to Nook Farm in Nagambie to continue their care.

The Victorian racing industry faced a challenging weekend as fires threatened multiple properties, including Lindsay Park’s Euroa facility and Levena Park, where all horses were safely relocated despite damage to paddocks. Training operations at Longwood have resumed in irrigated areas, with horses gradually returning to full training. The community rallied to support those affected, demonstrating resilience and commitment to rebuilding and continuing their work amid adversity.
