A Utah Republican lawmaker, Ariel Defay, has introduced House Bill 128 (HB128) to remove the requirement for drivers to signal when entering or exiting roundabouts. Defay argues that most drivers are unaware of this rule, and signaling in roundabouts is unnecessary because these intersections naturally require full attention and yield behavior. She also points out that signaling when entering a roundabout is redundant since there is only one direction to go, and indicating when exiting can be unclear or unnatural.
While the bill proposes eliminating the signaling rule for roundabout entry and exit, other regulations—such as signaling when changing lanes within a roundabout and only entering when safe—would remain in place. The proposal recently had its first hearing before the Utah House Transportation Committee, with Defay confident that the change will be positively received by drivers.
