US Equestrian, through its dressage Equine Ethics and Wellbeing Task Force, has developed Riding Standard Guidelines aimed at helping dressage athletes progress harmoniously with their horses. These guidelines encourage riders to assess readiness for moving up levels by evaluating consistent performance of required movements, scoring competency, and horse willingness. Strategies for success include practicing at the level below competition, understanding test directives, and ensuring proficiency in core movements that define each level. Riders are advised to thoughtfully evaluate strengths and areas for improvement, develop training plans, and confirm their horse’s readiness before advancing.
The Task Force is also reviewing broader welfare topics such as tack and equipment rules, training methods, warm-up behaviors, show frequency, blood rules, and coach certification, with updates expected throughout 2026. US Equestrian encourages the dressage community to adopt these guidelines to promote horse welfare and ethical competition practices, supporting the ongoing development of both horse and rider in the sport.
