Twelve young riders participated in the first day of the USEA’s Eventing Athletes Under 21 (EA21) East I clinic at Morven Park, focusing on dressage under the guidance of five-star rider Bec Braitling. The clinic emphasized the German Training Scale principles—rhythm, relaxation, connection, impulsion, straightness, and collection—through exercises like 10-meter circles combined with lengthened trots and leg yielding in trot and canter. A unique challenge involved riders switching horses mid-lesson to deepen their understanding and adaptability, with Braitling encouraging critical thinking about each horse’s strengths and weaknesses.
Braitling highlighted how these dressage exercises build engagement and suppleness, laying a foundation for the upcoming jumping lessons, which will include gymnastic and cross-country simulation exercises. The EA21 program aims to develop elite young event riders by providing consistent, high-quality instruction and fostering horsemanship skills. Launched in 2022, it offers regional clinics and a national camp for riders 21 and under who are established at Training Level or above, preparing them for future team opportunities.
