UPMC Children’s Hospital Helps 15-Year-Old Get Back in the Saddle: A Journey to Horse Riding Again

Fifteen-year-old Marissa Dankwardt underwent surgery at UPMC Children’s Hospital to remove a tumor from her spine, leaving her temporarily paralyzed. Her mother, Christine Dankwardt, was initially worried that Marissa would never be able to walk again.

After undergoing intensive physical therapy at UPMC Children’s Hospital, Marissa was able to regain her strength and mobility. She was determined to return to her passion for horse riding and worked hard to achieve that goal.

Thanks to the care and support she received at UPMC Children’s Hospital, Marissa was able to overcome her paralysis and return to horse riding. Her journey serves as an inspiring example of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
