United Horse Coalition Expands Equine Resource Database to Support Domestic Violence Survivors

The United Horse Coalition (UHC) has expanded its Equine Resource Database (UHCERD) by adding a new searchable category to support horse owners experiencing domestic violence. This addition connects victims with rescues, sanctuaries, and programs offering temporary emergency boarding or foster care for their horses, addressing a critical barrier where victims delay leaving abusive situations due to concern for their animals’ safety. The initiative aims to protect both the well-being of the owners and their equines during crises.

This expansion responds to documented links between domestic violence and animal welfare, emphasizing the importance of safe animal housing in breaking cycles of abuse. Programs like Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals’ “A Safe Place to Land” serve as models for this effort. The UHCERD remains a free, publicly accessible tool that also provides resources such as hay banks and veterinary assistance, now enhanced to better support domestic violence survivors with equine care needs.
