The UNC Equestrian Team provides a welcoming community for riders of all experience levels, from newcomers to those with over a decade of riding. With about 25 members from diverse academic backgrounds, the team offers a supportive environment where students can unwind, build friendships, and share their passion for horses. They practice weekly at Oak Hill Hunter Jumpers and compete individually and as a team in regional and national Intercollegiate Horse Show Association events, fostering camaraderie and mutual encouragement among teammates.
Team leaders Catherine Gorman and Kelly Peterson emphasize the mental, emotional, and physical growth that riding promotes, highlighting how the sport builds confidence and resilience. Despite the traditional rivalry between UNC and Duke, the equestrian teams maintain a friendly, collaborative relationship, often helping each other at competitions. Overall, the UNC Equestrian Team is valued not only for its competitive spirit but also for the lifelong connections and personal development it nurtures.
