UN Declares July 11 as World Horse Day to Promote Equine Awareness and Conservation

On June 3, 2025, the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a draft Resolution to proclaim July 11 as World Horse Day, initiated by Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa. The resolution received broad support, co-sponsored by numerous countries, including Austria, Brazil, China, and several nations from Central Asia, reflecting a global commitment to recognizing the significance of horses.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that there are approximately 57 million horses worldwide, utilized for various purposes such as riding, transport, and even contributions to healthcare and food production. However, the global horse population is declining due to factors like technological advancements, economic changes, and environmental issues, which have also diminished focus on horse breed preservation and equine husbandry.

The adopted resolution encourages member states and stakeholders to observe World Horse Day annually, promoting awareness of the economic and social importance of horses and the equine industry. The Mongolian representative emphasized the historical significance of horses in transportation, agriculture, and recreation, urging actions to support the equine industry and preserve equine cultural heritage amidst the challenges facing horse populations today.
