A survey of 1,519 UK horse owners by feed manufacturer Spillers revealed that 74% of leisure horses are overweight, yet many owners struggle to effectively manage weight loss despite understanding its causes. Key barriers include lack of exercise, overfeeding, and difficulty controlling calorie intake, with common management strategies being stabling, using small-holed haynets, soaking hay, and strip grazing. Although 57% of owners monitor weight regularly, most rely on imprecise methods, and many experience guilt and frustration, highlighting the emotional challenges of equine weight management.
Spillers aims to support owners through practical education and improved products, emphasizing low-calorie, high-fiber feeds. Additionally, the company has introduced resealable, recyclable treat packaging to enhance convenience and reduce environmental impact. The survey’s insights are intended to help Spillers partner with owners to combat equine obesity and improve horse health and welfare.
