UK Gambling Commission Proposes Regulatory Updates to Align with New Consumer Protection Laws

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has launched a consultation to update its Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice (LCCP) in line with the forthcoming Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 (DMCC Act). Key proposed changes include removing the UKGC’s current list of approved alternative dispute resolution (ADR) providers, as the DMCC Act transfers ADR accreditation authority to the Secretary of State. These updates aim to ensure gambling operators continue to provide free ADR access under the new regulatory framework, reflecting broader reforms that replace previous consumer protection laws and dispute resolution regulations.

Separately, the UK horse racing industry has strongly opposed government proposals to unify online gaming taxes, warning of severe negative impacts on the sport and associated jobs. In a rare protest, the British Horseracing Authority canceled all races on September 10 to highlight their concerns over the tax reforms, underscoring tensions between the industry and policymakers amid ongoing regulatory changes.
