The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking public input on proposed upgrades to a 6.75-mile trail along the west side of Deer Creek Reservoir, aiming to pave the currently unpaved path between Wasatch Mountain State Park and Deer Creek Dam. The paving would integrate the trail into the Utah Trail Network, creating a continuous paved system from Heber Valley to Provo Canyon. Supporters, including members of the Midway Trails Committee, favor a design that separates paved paths for cyclists, walkers, and runners from soft trails for mountain biking and horseback riding to preserve the natural experience and safety.
However, some local users, particularly horseback riders like Larry Powers, strongly oppose paving, fearing it would disrupt equestrian use and safety due to potential conflicts with faster cyclists and runners. Others, like mountain biker Steve Hendrick, support paving to accommodate older riders seeking safer, more comfortable options. UDOT encourages locals to submit feedback as it continues the feasibility study, expected to conclude in spring 2026.
