UC Davis Women’s Equestrian Team Files Federal Lawsuit Over Varsity Demotion

Members of the UC Davis Division I women’s equestrian team have filed a federal lawsuit challenging the university’s recent decision to demote the varsity team to a campus club starting in the 2026-27 academic year. The lawsuit, representing four anonymous athletes, alleges that UC Davis knew about the cut months in advance but continued recruiting under false pretenses, causing emotional distress and lost opportunities for the athletes. The plaintiffs seek punitive damages and reinstatement of the team for at least four years to allow current recruits to compete and graduate as promised. The timing of the announcement, after transfer deadlines, and alleged intimidation by athletic officials have intensified the controversy.

UC Davis justified the decision by citing extensive analysis and a strategic shift to elevate the women’s STUNT club to Division I status, aiming to better align resources and promote gender equity. Despite offers from parents to self-fund the equestrian program, the university has maintained its stance, promising to honor current athletes’ scholarships and support through the transition. The equestrian team is preparing for what may be its final meet on March 7, while supporters continue to rally on campus to “Keep Davis Riding,” highlighting concerns over transparency and fairness in the treatment of this women’s sport.
