Townshend Horse Breeder Fights State Seizure of Horses Amid Animal Cruelty Allegations

Robert Labrie, owner of Friesians of Majesty horse-breeding farm in Townshend, Vermont, is contesting the state’s seizure of about 100 horses from his farm since 2023 amid allegations of neglect and poor care. Labrie, who claims his skill with horses is a “gift from God,” insists the state wrongfully took his horses and disputes the qualifications of the state veterinarian involved. Investigations revealed many horses were severely underweight, dehydrated, and ill, leading to their removal and care by rescue organizations. Labrie, representing himself in court, faces criminal animal cruelty charges and has been denied some of his subpoenas, while the judge has urged him to focus on the condition of the seized horses.

During the forfeiture hearing, Labrie accused officials of wrongdoing and stonewalling, but the judge admonished him for straying off-topic and for disrespectful remarks toward witnesses. Labrie also shared personal and unrelated details during the proceedings, expressing a belief in an impending societal transformation. The judge has yet to announce a decision on the forfeiture of the horses.
