The equestrian world is currently focused on several key issues, including the recent 15-year ban of Olympic dressage rider Cesar Parra for severe horse abuse. The FEI Tribunal’s full report revealed Parra’s excessive use of whip and spurs, physical harm to horses, and use of harmful equipment, actions that endangered the horses’ mental and physical health. Parra has appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Additionally, efforts to improve road safety for horses and riders are underway, exemplified by a Leicestershire Police and Fire Service initiative where drivers who passed horses dangerously experienced a virtual reality simulation to understand a rider’s perspective.
Another significant topic is the RSPCA’s Horse Sense project, which aims to enhance equine welfare by addressing the lack of owner experience through behavior change tools. Research showed that many horses in England and Wales do not have their welfare needs fully met, often due to owners’ inexperience. The project seeks to ensure horses have better lives while maintaining the enjoyment and benefits humans gain from them. These developments highlight ongoing efforts to improve both horse welfare and safety in the equestrian community.
