Top British Judge Isobel Wessels Pays Tribute to Valegro and Uthopia for Their Talent and Impact on British Dressage

Top British dressage judge Isobel Wessels has paid tribute to the legendary horses Valegro and Uthopia following their recent passing. Having judged all of Valegro’s record-breaking performances, Wessels praised both horses for their exceptional talent, willingness, and harmonious partnership with riders Carl Hester and Charlotte Dujardin. She highlighted how these horses not only showcased outstanding training and character but also helped elevate Britain’s status on the international dressage stage, starting with their breakthrough at the 2011 European Championships where they contributed to Britain’s first team gold.

Wessels described Uthopia as a “little powerhouse” with remarkable power and willingness despite his smaller stature, and Valegro as a charismatic “big rubber ball” full of talent and personality. She reflected on the joy of judging such complete horses whose performances were effortless and beautiful, likening their work to a symphony. Their success and presence marked a defining moment for British dressage, signaling the country’s arrival as a dominant force in the sport.
