Tomu Bulai and the Growing Horse Sanctuary Giving Fiji’s Neglected Horses a Second Chance

Tomu Bulai, the leading hand at Horse Sanctuary Fiji, has dedicated six years to rescuing and rehabilitating neglected horses at this not-for-profit center founded in 2019 by Morika Hunter. Starting with just four horses, the sanctuary now cares for over 40 animals, providing them with food, medical care, and a loving environment. The sanctuary operates entirely on donations and sponsorships, offering a refuge for abused, injured, or abandoned horses without charging rescue fees. Bulai, originally from Navua, grew up around livestock and has transformed his practical view of horses into one of deep empathy through his work at the sanctuary.

Located on six and a half acres by the Navua River, the sanctuary not only rescues horses but also runs outreach programs to educate communities on proper animal care. Despite its success, the sanctuary faces challenges such as limited space and funding. Bulai praises Hunter’s selfless dedication and urges greater compassion toward animals, emphasizing that horses, like humans, need love and care. The sanctuary also fosters community involvement by allowing sponsors to visit and interact with their horses, turning rescue into a family and community effort.
