Title: Wild Horse Rescuers Save Horses from Dangerous Mud Pit in Arizona

In Herber-Overgaard, Arizona, wild horse rescuers have successfully saved several horses, including a mother and her foal, from a dangerous mud pit that has formed due to ongoing drought conditions. Betty Nixon, a member of Friends of the Heber Wild Horses, received urgent calls for help and quickly mobilized a team to rescue the trapped animals. The mud pit, once a reliable watering hole, has become perilous, with the U.S. Forest Service stating they will not refill it or take responsibility for the wild horses.

The rescue efforts were challenging, requiring teamwork and patience as volunteers worked for over an hour to free the exhausted mare without causing her harm. They used ropes to carefully pull her out while allowing her time to rest. Ultimately, their collaborative efforts paid off, and both the mare and her foal were able to return to safety in the forest.

The U.S. Forest Service acknowledged the adverse conditions created by the drought, which has limited food and water sources for wildlife. While they expect the mud pit to dry out soon, Nixon has reported additional incidents of horses getting stuck, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by these wild animals in the harsh environment.
