Volusia County officials are exploring the possibility of allowing horseback riding on Daytona Beach, following a recent proposal to create a dog-friendly beach. On May 20, the County Council approved a motion to gather more information and discuss the feasibility of establishing two designated areas for horseback riding—one at each end of the county.
While some residents welcome the idea, concerns have been raised regarding the cleanup responsibilities associated with horse waste on the beach. Local resident Mark Fox highlighted the potential issues, noting that people already react strongly to smaller animals, like dogs, relieving themselves in public spaces.
Animal sanctuary owner Angelique Barbara believes that with proper preparation and guidelines—similar to those in St. Johns County, where riders must complete an online course—horseback riding on the beach could be a successful initiative. She emphasized the need for a plan that ensures safety for both the animals and beachgoers, while also catering to the interests of the local equestrian community.
