Title: The Majestic Wild Horses of South Africa: A Journey Through Their Untamed Existence

Wild horses evoke powerful imagery, particularly in the American West, symbolizing freedom and raw strength. In South Africa, however, the concept of wild horses is less romanticized, often associated with feral horses abandoned by owners. Yet, true wild horses do exist in South Africa, notably in two locations: near Kaapsehoop in Mpumalanga and at the Rooisand Nature Reserve in the Western Cape.

The Kaapsehoop horses are descendants of those left behind when local mines closed, now living freely on the escarpment, cared for by local residents. In contrast, the Rooisand wild horses inhabit a stunning coastal landscape characterized by white sands and lush vegetation, adding to the area’s allure and mystique.

Leanne Dryburgh, a local photographer, has dedicated nearly five years to studying the Rooisand wild horses, driven by a passion for their well-being and a commitment to preserving their wild nature. Her observations highlight the resilience of these horses and the unique environments they inhabit, underscoring their significance as a national treasure.
