Title: Silver Valley 4-H Riders: A Year of Adventure, Learning, and Community Service

The Silver Valley 4-H riders has 11 members this year. Traditionally, we start our year with a trail ride in October along the Battle River. This ride was very pretty with all the fall colours and we get to cross the river with our horses.

Our club rides at the Calnash Ag Event Centre on Monday nights, and we have two instructors that help us with our riding. We practice patterns, showmanship, play some games, and we also have some English rides too.

For our Christmas ride, we dressed our horses up and played some horse games, and we ended the night with secret Santa.

Our club held a public speaking event in February, and many members advanced to zones, districts, regionals, and provincials. We are all very good at public speaking and had some amazing speeches.

We have many fundraisers throughout the year – perogy sales, chamber of commerce, flower basket, and Boston Pizza celebrity servers.

This past weekend was the Alberta 4-H highway clean up. Silver Valley was out on this beautiful day – you might have honked as you drove by us! We also did some volunteer work at Old McDonald Kennels, helping out with the animals, and other kennels of our choice.

We are very busy riding and practicing as much as we can. May 10 and 11 we are attending a clinic at the Calnash to learn different skills to help us prepare for our regional show at the end of May, at the Westerner in Red Deer.

The Silver Valley 4-H riders, consisting of 11 members, kicked off their year with a scenic trail ride along the Battle River in October, enjoying the vibrant fall colors and crossing the river on horseback. Weekly meetings at the Calnash Ag Event Centre include riding practice with two instructors, where members work on patterns, showmanship, and participate in games, including English riding.

In addition to riding activities, the club hosted a festive Christmas ride featuring horse games and a Secret Santa event. A public speaking event in February showcased members’ skills, with many advancing to higher levels of competition, demonstrating their proficiency in delivering speeches.

Title: Iowa State University Hosts Successful Equine Extravaganza for Youth Development

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach hosted its annual Equine Extravaganza on April 12 and 13 at the Ellsworth Community College Equestrian Center in Iowa Falls. This two-day event brought together nearly 60 youth in grades 3–12 for a weekend filled with learning, creativity, and equine-focused competition.

The Iowa 4-H Youth Development Program organized the Equine Extravaganza, which allowed participants to showcase their knowledge, skills, and passion for horses through various team and individual events.

“This event gives youth a chance to demonstrate what they’ve learned about equine topics in a supportive environment that values fairness, respect, and sportsmanship,” said Lisa Berkland, 4-H youth development specialist.

“Youth can participate on their own or as part of a team, which helps them develop cooperation, communication, and leadership skills as they work toward shared goals,” added Peggy Auwerda, equine specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach.

Fifty-three youth in grades 4–12 competed in hippology, horse judging, horse quiz bowl, presentations, and public speaking competitions. Additionally, 27 youth in grades 3–12 took part in participatory events, submitting 68 horseless horse items for evaluation. These creative projects included photography, painting, drawing, scrapbooking, woodworking, 3-D art, digital storytelling, model horses, and creative writing.

Top senior division winners in horse judging, hippology, quiz bowl, public speaking, and individual demonstrations earned the opportunity to represent Iowa 4-H at the Eastern National Roundup in Louisville, Kentucky, this November.

In addition to competing, participants had the chance to explore their interests, try new things, and build lasting connections with others who share their enthusiasm for horses. The weekend celebrated both knowledge and creativity, leaving youth inspired and more confident in their equine journey. A complete list of award winners can be found below.
