State Senator Patrick Joyce is advocating for the Illinois harness racing industry by advancing Senate Bill 1473, which aims to revitalize the sector through the establishment of new horse racing tracks. Joyce emphasizes that this initiative would not impose any financial burden on taxpayers while creating thousands of permanent jobs across various roles, including breeders and trainers.
The proposed legislation sets a deadline for developing a new harness racetrack and casino in Cook County’s south suburbs, as well as another track in Macon County. The privately funded project includes a mile-long racing track, grandstands, a sports complex, and various amenities, projecting the creation of 300 full-time jobs and generating $27 million in annual revenue.
Industry leaders, like Jeff Davis from the Illinois Harness Horsemen’s Association, highlight the historical significance of Illinois in the horse racing sector and express optimism that with proper support, the state can regain its status as a competitive destination for the equine industry. The bill has successfully passed the Senate Executive Committee, marking a step forward in this revitalization effort.
