A seal pup named Wide Awake was rescued in Guernsey after being found at Moulin Huet, weighing only half of its expected weight for its age. The pup was dehydrated and exhausted, weighing 22 kg (3st 7lb) and displayed aggressive behavior, which rescuers interpreted as a positive sign of its will to survive, according to Geoff George, head of marine mammals at the GSPCA.
Wide Awake will join three other rescued seal pups—Dark Horse, Swish, and Fireworks—who all require round-the-clock care. Mr. George emphasized the challenges of caring for such sick pups, noting that without the GSPCA’s intervention, these animals would not survive.
The four pups will be temporarily housed while the GSPCA prepares a new facility for their care. GSPCA manager Steve Byrne expressed optimism about the pups’ recovery, stating that they are doing well despite their initial poor condition.
