Honey Bee, a former Texas racehorse, was rescued by the Voice for Horses Rescue Network in early May, arriving severely underweight at 400 pounds below the normal range for horses. Diana Murphy, the nonprofit’s founder, chose Honey Bee from a group of horses needing rescue due to her dire condition. The organization, which has saved over 800 horses since its inception in 1999, aims to raise awareness about the cruelty and neglect faced by many horses, particularly former racehorses.
At the sanctuary in Temperance, Honey Bee is undergoing rehabilitation, but her journey is complicated by health concerns, including a potential cancer diagnosis. Murphy and her volunteers, who have witnessed the heartbreaking neglect of many horses, emphasize the need for community support to address these issues. They draw parallels between the treatment of racehorses and greyhounds, highlighting the urgent need for adoption and care.
Despite the challenges, including the impending sale of the property where the sanctuary operates, Murphy remains dedicated to the cause. She is actively seeking funds to secure a new home for the horses, estimating a need of $200,000 to $450,000. The Voice for Horses Rescue Network continues to advocate for these animals, with ongoing efforts to raise awareness and support for their mission. More information can be found on their website.
