Karen Knourek, born in Pasadena, California, faced a tragic childhood when she and her sister lost their parents at a young age and were adopted by their aunt. Growing up in Santa Barbara, she excelled in school and sports, eventually attending Fresno State College, where she met her future husband, Michael Rooney. They married in 1963 and settled in Santa Cruz County, where Karen began her teaching career and embraced a vibrant family life filled with outdoor activities and community involvement.
As a dedicated educator, Karen taught early elementary grades while fostering a nurturing environment for her daughters on their family ranch. She was actively involved in her church and cherished family traditions, such as baking and berry picking. After retiring from teaching, she continued to impact students as a part-time reading specialist in Redmond, Oregon, while also enjoying travel and wintering in Kauai with her husband.
In her later years, Karen battled Alzheimer’s Disease but maintained her love for family and friends until her passing, just weeks before her husband. She is survived by her three daughters and their families, and is remembered for her strong Christian faith and joyful reunions with loved ones in Heaven. A memorial service date will be announced on legacy.com.
