Joyce Newberry, the founder of Oaklands Riding School and Newoak Stud, passed away on May 5 at the age of 74 after a brief illness. Raised in Exeter, Devon, she developed a passion for horses early in life, attending her first horse show at just seven years old. In 1971, she established Oaklands Riding School, which grew to become one of the largest in southern England, continuing to thrive with over 50 horses and a legacy of families returning to learn to ride.

Joyce was also deeply involved in breeding Dartmoor ponies, with her stud achieving notable success at prestigious events such as the Horse of the Year Show and Royal Windsor. Alongside her daughter Jacky, she won multiple awards, including the leading Dartmoor breeder of the year. Joyce was recognized for her keen eye in judging horses across various breeds, and her contributions to the equestrian community were significant.

Known for her vibrant personality and love for animals, Joyce is survived by her daughter Jacky, her brother Tony, and her two miniature dachshunds. A celebration of her life is scheduled for June 10 at Newoak Stud in Exeter, honoring her enduring impact on the equestrian world.
